Gyergy\u00f3 Hockey Club carries forward a 77-year-old tradition. Ice hockey is not only the national sport of the people living in the Gyergy\u00f3 Basin but also a defining element of life in the region. The movement began with the formation of the first ice hockey team in 1948 in Gyergy\u00f3szentmikl\u00f3s. This passion didn\u2019t just flourish in the town itself but spread throughout the entire Gyergy\u00f3sz\u00e9k area. Hockey boards were built in every major settlement, allowing locals\u2014from toddlers just learning to walk to those over seventy years old\u2014to skate during the harsh winter freezes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In 1882, the Skating Club was established in Gyergy\u00f3szentmikl\u00f3s, featuring a rink between the two branches of the B\u00e9k\u00e9ny Creek, complete with a warming hut and changing rooms. Skating was already popular in Gyergy\u00f3szentmikl\u00f3s by the late 19th century, but ice hockey only took root relatively late, in the winter of 1948.<\/p>

The first ice hockey team was formed at the end of 1948, initiated by physical education teacher Tibor Basilides, after organizing matches between local high school classes. According to records, the team played its first official game on January 1, 1949, in Cs\u00edkszereda against the local high school team. It was during this match that the boys from Gyergy\u00f3 saw a hockey board and a real puck for the very first time\u2026<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t

Teams were formed, and legendary rivalries took place between Gyergy\u00f3\u2019s communities, often cheered on by thousands of fans. Anyone who has ever been part of it knows what a local championship means when teams like Gyergy\u00f3remete\u2019s Kereszthegy, Gyergy\u00f3sz\u00e1rhegy\u2019s B\u00e1stya, Gyergy\u00f3alfalu\u2019s Bucsin, Gyergy\u00f3csomafalva\u2019s D\u00e9lhegy, and Gyergy\u00f3\u00fajfalu\u2019s Katorzsa competed\u2014whether in the elementary school age groups or at the veterans\u2019 level.<\/p>

Unfortunately, winters in Gyergy\u00f3 are no longer what they used to be a few decades ago, making it difficult to keep these traditions alive. There\u2019s no longer the opportunity to hold outdoor tournaments on natural ice. However, the love for hockey remains strong. Under the coordination of the Gyergy\u00f3 Hockey Club, children and youth across all Gyergy\u00f3sz\u00e9k communities still have the chance to play ice hockey through the GYHK youth development program.\u00a0<\/p>

  • 1958:<\/strong> Halad\u00e1s wins the national third place, the first championship medal for Gyergy\u00f3 hockey<\/li>\n \t

  • 1990:<\/strong> The senior team disbands due to lack of support<\/li>\n \t
  • 1995:<\/strong> The team is re-established as Progym under coach Csaba Baslidesz, based on players from the local U18 champion team<\/li>\n \t
  • 1999:<\/strong> Progym wins the bronze medal in the Romanian Championship, the second medal after 41 years<\/li>\n \t
  • 2002:<\/strong> Progym achieves the greatest success in Gyergy\u00f3 hockey history so far: coached by Bal\u00e1zs K\u00e9menes, they reach the final and become runners-up in the Romanian Championship<\/li>\n \t
